Where is the temp unit located on the engine block? The 40 service manual shows nothing or say's anything about it.The parts manual also shows no temp unit.If their is a unit what is the part number? My gauge show's no movement at all. I would like to replace if I could find ,and knew what to buy. thanks

One thought...the 420 parts book listing is under "water temperature gauge" or "gauges, water temperature" rather than "temperature gauge".

The sensor on my 40t screws into the rear of the block with a wire going to the gauge as described by LC. Easy to see on the 1954 jd40T. I replaced this one 2-3 years ago, about $50 as i remember from the jd dealer.

If it's the same as the 420 (and probably should be), the sensor is located on top of the motor on the left hand (muffler) side, just to the rear of the muffler. It should be a hex-head (about 5/8" or 3/4"??) with a tube coming out of it and running back to the instrument panel.

From what I've heard, the replacement gauge from Deere doesn't match the original gauge, but someone else can comment more knowledgably.
