Just bought a 1969 4020D with 600 hours on major overhaul. Only problem I have found is when you hold the clutch in for a long time you lose power steering and brakes.Could someone give me a place to look to fix this problem. I did change Hyd filter and that helped some.

I HAVE A 1972 4020 DOING THE SAME THING. IN MY CASE AN MAYBE IN YOURS THE TRACTOR HAS A LOT OF HOURS AND AT SOME TIME SOMETHING WENT WRONG IN THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM TO GET METAL IN THE SYSTEM AND DID DAMAGE TO THE WHOLE SYSTEM BECAUSE IT WORKS EVERYTHING TOGETHER. A LITTLE EXTRA DAMAGE TO THE TRANSFER PUMP, A LITTLE TO THE MAIN PUMP, AND LITTLE TO ALL THE VALVES IN THE SYSTEM EQUAL OUT TO LOOSING PRESSURE IN THE SYSTEM FAST.

Howdy Merlin,
I also have a 69' 4020. It does the same thing. If I continue to hold the clutch on mine, not only do I lose power steering and brakes, but the PTO clutch releases, stopping the implement. This is an annoyance, when I dig post holes. I wanted to put a front end loader on mine, but am afraid I will have a hydraulic problem when doing tight work. Good tractor if you overlook this problem.

all jds have this problem. i have a loader on a 2510 anda 4020 and never havea problem with the hyds. stoping. what you need to do in the case of it quiting is to put tractor in park and let of the clutch. teh hyds charge pump runs off the tranny so after holdin' the clutch in for a few minutes it loses pressure to main pump nothing to worry about just dont hold the clutch for ever.

Clutch doesn't have anything to do with hydraulic.
Hydraulic pump runs directly off front engine
crankshaft.

Transfer pump in rear end runs off of top shaft in tranny. Therefore, foot on clutch means no fluid to hydraulic pump.

Once it's primed after initial start up doesn't
it pull it's own oil to the main pump?

No. The tranny pump must feed the main pump. On the syncro-range, at least, the tranny pump is driven only when the main clutch is engaged.

If the hydraulic pressure decays too rapidly, you might try recharging the nitrogen cannister located just behind the dash. It is a pressure "reservoir" designed to bridge hydraulic pressure when the clutch is disengaged. No doubt the cannister has leaked down over time. Your JD dealer can take care of it.

It's easy to fix. Just take you foot off the clutch.
