I have owned a 4010 gasoline model with a Marvel - Schleber carb for about one year. There are days when it runs great, and days when all of a sudden it will sputter and normally stop dead like it is not getting any gas, but I suspect it actually is getting too much as when I drain the carb quite a bit of gas comes out. When I try adjusting the float I get it to the point where no gas comes out of the needle type plunger, and just the slightest adjustment (bend the float) the other way and I seem to get too much. In particular, sometimes when sideways on a hill, or going up a hill, it sputters. Ohter times it runs fine going up and down hills. Any ideas?

Try a new needle and seat. You might want to just go ahead and put in a new carb kit and rebuild it while you have the carb off.
