Baker Multi-valve

The '46 "A" that I have came to me with a Baker Mutivalve on it. I'm 99% sure that the rockshaft is power-lift, rather than power-trol (even though some joker stuck a power-trol sticker on it!) since I have the under-seat foot pedals to control the rockshaft (two positions, up and down).

My question is, just what the heck is the Baker valve for?!? I can see that there are four hydralic fittings on the thing (only one has a hydralic quick-connect on it now) but I'm baffled by what happens when I pull or push the lever that comes out of the valve....

The rockshaft works just fine with the foot pedals (one kick up, another kick, down...) but when I pull the Baker valve lever the shaft rocks up (or down) until I release the lever, and the shaft goes back to where it was. If I hold the lever until the rockshaft rotates fully, the engine begins to lug, as if the tractor was really working to keep it there.

What's going on? Is the Baker valve supposed to effect rockshaft operation, or is that a side-effect of me operating the baker valve with no hydraulic hose attached?

And BTW, was the Baker valve a factory (or dealer) option? And just how practical are these things for working remote hydralics? Can I run a couple of big cylinders off of it (i.e. a front loader)?

Thanks in advace-

chris

I have a 1938 G that I put a baker valve on a number of years ago to lift a #5 mower with a hydraulic cylinder. It also has the power lift. The bvalve doesn't affect the rockshaft at all on mine. The valve was used so that you could use a hydraulic cylinder on the old tractors with powerlift. The power trol boxes had couplers built in for a remote cylinder. It wasn't made by JD but you could add them on. I understand you could stack them one in front of another and use multiple remote cylinders. I believe they would also work with the powertrol but not sure. With the power trol you could use the rockshaft or the remotes but not both together. Believe you could use one of these to give you both. I think I still have the info I got with the valve. If you want to send me and e mail I can scan it and send it to you. They work great. Sounds like yours was set up for a single action cylinder. There are 4 posts, you could use the 2 out the side of the 2 out the front. I know there was also a way to use a single action cylinder but don't remember what it was. I always used a double acting one. Could be the rockshaft would not lift if you had weight on it when moving the lever as you describe, just oil bleeding back. Let me know if you want to info on this.
