Well, after pulling the flywheel (heavy S.O.B at that!) off my 1946 A, I was a bit worried at finding that the crankshaft end play appeared to be about 1/4 inch! I thought this was odd, then read that the crank end play is set *with the flywheel* to between 5-10 thousandths.
What a beautiful system! Is the 1/4 inch of play I have excessive? Or is this normal with the flywheel removed?

As an aside, if you're planning on removing your flywheel, don't bother with anything less than a 3/4 drive ratchet, and be prepared to be surprised when that baby clears the end of the splined shaft. It's HEAVY! (Mine's about 125 lbs.)

get some new grade 8 bolts and weld across the head and grind it to fit the flywheel like the square bolt so it won't turn when you tighten it then get a great big cheater

The John Deere flywheel wrench will help you loosen and tighten the flywheel nuts to the proper torque specs. I have flywheel wrenches for sale.

Chuck, the 46 "A" uses adjustable main bearings & I don't believe there is a thrust washer on the crank like the later sleeve bearings. At least I have never seen one there.

Chris, your right the fly-wheel is heavy. The 1/4 in play you have after removing the flywheel is standard. I wouldn't set the clearance more than 010, 4 to 6 would be more like it, you have to have someone hold the crank on the pulley side toward you when setting the clearance. Besure to line up the oil slinger slot with the tang on the flywheel, one spline on the crank is short and has a set screw in it, match that with the proper spline on the flywheel, the bolts on that 46 flywheel are hard to get at, just be sure to get them tight. luck.
