The John Deere Model 60 has two 6 volt batteries in series. Is it acceptable to replace the two 6-volt batteries with a single 12 volt battery? I think that answer should be yes - but just thought I would check.

Bigger is better with batteries. For occassional use tractors & for cooler climates the Hibernator from Deere withstands sitting idle better than regular batteries. Just put a 750CCA in the 435 & it starts nearly instantly. For hot weather & regular usage the HD Strongbox batteries are robust & powerful.

Glenn, no problem, just get a battery with plenty of cold cranking power. In a lot of ways a single 12 is better than 2- 6's. Unless you have a perfect set of matched 6's they won't charge correctly. It probably wouldn't hurt to set your voltage regulator to about 14.2 volts if you install a new automobile battery as they are designed to charge at 14.2 volts. Note: tractor batteries differ from car batteries in how the plates are held in & therefore car batteries aren't as good for rough usage or high vibration conditions but unless you are going to put may hard hours on your tractor a car battery will work fine.
