I just went to start my tractor and the solenoid just chatters or buzzes and the starter doesn't engage. The battery (8v)is charged up and I even jumped it with a 12v and got the same thing. Do I need a new solenoid or is it something else.

Also be sure the solenoid is properly grounded. It may be grounded through its mounting lugs (remove and clean away rust, dirt, paint and remount) or have a separate ground terminal and wire.

Jon You could have a bad solenoid. First remove the wires and clean all connections then reinstall the wiring. Also make for sure your battery posts and cables are in good shape and clean.
