would like to know what years this option was available on the early JD's and was it a factory option or added by an after-market mfg. any other info you may have on this topic would be appreciated; i.e. when did they stop mfg. this option, what JD's was it available on, etc., etc. and do any of you happen to have owned or now currently own a JD with this option on it?

In the 40's & 50's, I used a 1938 A that had a Behlen 5 & 6. As Bob said, you put the trans in neutral, engage the Behlen lever, then use the Hi/Lo lever for 5/6. If you happened to forget to put the trans in neutral, it was locked in 2 gears at once and the tractor would not move. The Behlen Box was about 12"X12"X3", mounted on the left side behind the flywheel. Sixth went about 18 mph, a little faster than the later, factory equiped tractors (such as 1946,7,8), Tractor is still in the family - I hauled it a few hundred miles for my uncle this spring.

Now I know why some of those older JD's seemed to fly down the road! When I was a kid (before computers & the internet!) I always wondered why some of those JD's could outrun a Farmall; now I know how they did it!

I can assure you that Deere did not ever send a tractor out of their factory with the Behlen setup. It was strictly after market. I'm sure most were installed by J.D. dealers, some by repair shops and a few by industrious, hands-on type owners.

As near as I can remember (I was pretty little and
that was a LONG time ago) the neighbor,Red Weaver,
had a local tractor repair shop order it from
Behlen, and Carl Wysong installed it in their
shop. I remember the silver plate behind the
flywheel and how that old "A" flew !!!

The Behlen Road Gear was an add on gear box sold by the Behlen Co.I know they were available for unstyled As,Bs,and early styled 4 speed Bs.They were operated by putting the tractor's trans. in neutral ,and using the tractor hi-lo shifter in conjunction with the Behlen box for fifth and sixth gears.Bob,from Triple G Service.
