It has gotten to the point where it fouls the plugs in a hour or less. The plugs have a soot like deposit on them.Had the carb overhauled ,no help. It has magnet conversion in distributor. The engine does not pick up any rpm when spraying starting fluid around the intake manifold so I am assuming there are no leaks .When the plugs lasted longer the front two plugs fouled first.Has zenith carb.

The best solution to this problem, is to find a 404 diesel from an old 105 or 7700 combine, and do the change over. There is a lot of these in salvage yards. You will have a tractor to enjoy and not one to fight every time you use it.

If you want to stay with the gas engine, as I doubt that the plugs are oil fouling, but rather fuel fouling try a few things. Go to a hotter spark plug, (not champion) and a high energy coil to go with the electonic ignition. Make sure the voltage regulator is set for the proper voltage.

Go back to the carburetor. The zenith carburetor has an vacuum operated accelerator pump, every time the carb. butterfly opens the engine vacuum drops and the spring loaded plunger gives the engine an extra shot of fuel. If the plunger is not free in the bore, or govenors are over active. The accererator plunger can start pulsating, this pumps too much fuel, and too much of the raw, new formulated gas is death on a spark plug.

My guess is, if you get the carburetor right and the govenors free and properly adjusted you will see some improvement.

In short, put a diesel in it. You will be happy!

if the engine is NOT burning oil, then i would suspect the valve stem seals. when they get old and worn out they let oil past the stems into the combustion chamber. do a compression check first. if that is ok, then it's PROBABLY the valve stem seals.
