What I need to know is did they make a 12 volt generator? And if they did where could I locate one to fit on the B I just bought its 12 volt now but doesnt have a generator on it and I would perfer to stay with the 12volt system. Thanks Guys.

Alan, I got a starter shop to change the field coils in a JD440 starter motor to 12 volt. It worked fine in a 12 volt system. There are those that claim you can just use a JD original 6 volt starter in 12 volt systems without any problems.

It is in fact true you can use 12v on a factory 6v starter without any implications. The only time you will have trouble is if you don't know how to let of the switch and get it too hot, but that is true with any starter. Bill {Antique Acres}

The later styled A's used a 12 volt generator. I would bet they would bolt right on to your tractor. It would be worth looking into. I have a 1948 B I converted to 12 volts, but I used an alternator rather than a generator. Works good and less expensive than a generator.

I have a 48 B that I just rebuilt.
The 6v system was a little weak for the motor. I went to the local automotive electrical shop , had the regulator changed to 12v and
put in a 12v battery, Now I have a 12v 48 B John Deere that looks original but cranks much better.
Good Luck!!!!!
