Have a jd500a backhoe. when the hydraulic fluid warms up the pump seems to cavatate when working the machine. there are also two adjustments on this pump, one is stroke control and anther which i am not sure what that does. one is on top, the other on the bottom.

1. is the belly pump not supplying enough fluid to main pump? how to test?
2. what about the other main pump adjustment, whats that for?

any suggestions??

usually when the front pump chatters, it is because it is not being supplied enough oil from the transmission pump. Start with the basics. Clean the suction screen. Sometimes thats all it takes if its full of years of debris. The top screw on the pump should be a destroke screw. That will shut the pump off. The lower screw is for pressure adjustment. There are other things to check , but a good rule to follow is to start with the easy and CHEAP things first...the suction screen
