I found a 40 Utility tractor in fair shape, it is going for $1700. It is missing both battery side covers, the front grille is dented pretty badly, def. needs paint, has a bit of an electrical problem, one fender has a hole in it. The front tires are car tires, def needs a lot of TLC.

It also runs quite well, the clutch is good, operates well except for a grounding problem in the electrical system. Do you think it is worth $1700? If not how much do you think I should offer for the machine?

Thanks,

Karl

Probably a 40U restored is worth about $4000. The weakest point to these tractors is the transmission. Most of the U's have live power but without I'd put a little less money in it.

Karl,
1700.00 is a steal if it is running good. These little tractors can do quite a bit of work if thats what your looking for. As for parts, the 420's and 430's are about 80% the same, I have found everything I have needed for mine either over the internet or from the JD dealer. If you buy it get the oper., serv.,& parts manuals and also the parts manual for the 420/430. The one part that I couldn't find for mine I found within two weeks when I looked for the same part (and part number) off of a 420. Mine has done everything I have wanted it to do, but like all equipment it does have its limitations. Just depends on what you plan on using it for.

This is the best tractor ever made for running a sickle mower. Third gear is well over 5 mph (if you have the big wheels)--just about the maximum speed for a good stand of prairie hay, and the power is quite adequate. You will need a good steering knob to keep up with right angle turns while remaining in 3rd--and once you master it, you'll be grinning. And make sure that your right brake is set high, so that stopping the right wheel is not a chore.
Just make sure that you have a JD #5 mower with at least a 7 ft bar and you'll be happy. It is very respectable with a 2-bottom mounted JD plow, but with a mounted disc and other heavy implements you will need all three pieces of the JD front weight kit (which, I think, is getting rare).

I have a 40U and it has been pretty reliable as a small runabout tractor. But it isnt designed to do any hard pulling. 1700$ sounds like a good price

Yes it is worth 1700. You should be able to fix its problems, even painting reletively cheap. The largest expense will be the tires, and the grill can be found from certain suppliers.

I'd say it's worth $1700. I have one, but don't use it except to play with. It doesn't take much room to store and it's easy to haul around to shows. The 40U I have is great for kids to learn how to drive. My youngest son, age 9, first learned to drive on my 40U. They only produced alittle over 5000.

What gets me is the fact that the 40U is almost the same as a 320U. The 320U's are selling for HIGH $$$. I'm sure a few folks would know the difference if I painted a yellow stripe on this 40U and changed the serial # plate, but not many. (Course, I'd have to do so with a late model 40U so the front grill would match.)

The owners manual for the tractor notes that the 3 point hookup and the PTO cannot be used at the same time. Never had chance to check the accuracy of that statement. I sold my 40U in 1978 because I could not find PTO shaft for it. PTO shaft was option for them. On the other hand, the 40U is more rare. You makes your choice and pays your money.
