ok clooney, you helped on my 40U, how about this. bought a 520, broken mainifold so no way to hear engine noises. pulled engine down, honed and std. rings, new rod brngs std, new guides and valves, surfaced head, general restoration, new powershaft drum and clutches, powershaft oil pump and seals, axle seals, main clutch, dogs, toggles, tires, etc, paint and came out beautiful. there is a tick in the engine that you would swear is a loose tappet. not the case, stethescope every part of the engine, powertrol pump, governor, the noise is the loudest at the bolts holding the rockershaft down. pull the rockershaft and push rods out of my perfectly quiet 530 and put on the 520, same noise! (yes i understand JD firing sequence and valve adjusting procedure) Pull the engine down again, replace: camshaft, cam follower guide, cam followers, camshaft gear, reassemble, retorque, readjust valves, noise still there! Even called one of two cyl advisory members and had him listen on the phone, no solution. Absolutely beautiful tractor, runs like a top, with an annoying tick. Any thoughts?

I have restored several 520's and had a similar problem. You may have a piece of manifold that has entered the cylinder after the overhaul. The pistons has little or no clearance on most of the surface as the firing chamber is in the head. My thought is that you are beating your piston lip and or rings. Better take the head off and check. I wouldn't run any more.

Hopefully that's not the case as the head was reworked and a new manifold installed. But I do have a bore scope and will check before starting again. I have put 19 hours on it with the tapping, so if something is floating around I expect she'd have come undone by now. Thanks for the reply. Clooney gave me some thoughts and I'll keep you posted. Al

alcgar, can you change the noise with RPM, shorting a plug, hot , cold, timing retarded, load etc? Can you put a timing light on & see if the noise is a once per revolution or once per every other rev. & where on the piston stroke the noise is coming in at?(you will have to mark tdc, bdc & 1/2 way between on the flywheel with different colors or types of marks). Is a push rod hitting the side of the head pass through or head gasket? Was there a ridge left at the top of the bore that the top ring could be hitting? Were the wrist pins tight when you had it apart? Was there excessive play in the cam to crank gear? Is the inner crank thrust washer worn & allowing the crank throw to hit the cam gear? This is going to be hard to do by E-Mail, can you furnish any more info? What state do you live in?
