420 I Information Needed

I have just aquired a model 420 I (there is a single vertical line stamped on serial plate next to the model that I assume is an "I"). It is serial number
116535 which according to range makes it a 1957. It has power steering, foot throttle (on right side), 5 speed, "reverser", and 3 pt hitch with PTO.
Also adjustable rear wheels with 12.4X28 tires and wide front end with 6.00X16 tires. Are these tires standard size? It is painted green and yellow
and after scratching dow to bare metal I can't find any yellow paint underneath, but it has been repainted. Is this the original color? I am looking for
any information, history on this model tractor.

Also, I would like some help in understanding how the 3 pt works. It has two levers on the right side that both seem to raise and lower the lift arms.
The right lift arm is a single piece, but the left arm is actually two arms held together with a removable pin. There is also a lever under the left side of
the seat that does not appear to do anything. Can anyone give me a lesson on how this is all supposed to work and what each of the three levers
does?

Thanks, for all help.

I have two 430's (one I use for parts) that are set up similar. They have the same size tires and are adjustable. Wish I had the power steering.
The setup on the 3-pt is the same. I plan on adapting the left lever to raise and lower the sickle bar on my JD No. 5 mower that has a foot lift now.
Sounds like your tractor was made with all the fancy options.
The reverser was an option available with the 5 speed transmission and the foot throttle was an option according to my operators manual.
The 430 has a lever by the shift that engages the pto and I believe a lever to setup the use of the split on the two levers to raise and lower the 3-pt. My book is at the farm but I believe it is important that the lever that operates the 3-pt. be in the right position to disengage the left arm. At present mine has the left arms locked together like yours.
I really like this tractor for moderate work.
If you plan on doing brush hogging -- I would suggest not going over 5-ft. wide and have a slip clutch on the PTO shaft drive. I had to replace a gear in the pto drive train twice using a 6-ft. brush hog with direct drive. ($350 each)

The two levers for 3 pt both have round knobs. The foot throttle seems to be a factory setup as it works in parallel with the hand throttle and does not look like an "add on". Any other info that others can provide would be appreciated.

Hard to explain, even with a manuel. There are dual cylinders that can be operated independengly.
With the pin removed and the lever under the seat in the REAR position. The load control must be turned out against the load control yoke. This is a bolt under the upper arm, rear of tractor. This might be useful when cultivating with a two row tractor and you only want to cultivate one row. Normal operation is both cylinders working together with the pin in place with the lever under the seat in the forward position. The left lever must be locked in place and not used. Set the stop so it can't be used. Use only the right lever. Do not under any circumstance place right lever to rear and attempt to operate with left lever with cylinders are parallel and load and depth control set to operate. May damage. theres more in manuel. If you would like me to scan you a couple of pages, email me

DW, while I've never had any experience with a 420, {we've had a 430 and 440 crawler) If the tractor has a reverser, it must be an industrial model but I thought they just put reversers on crawlers, not rubber tires. As far as the foot throttle, I've never seen any two cylinder, Ag or industrial with that feature. And the hydraulic levers, I have one question, is there any difference with the shape on the handles? Is one a padded flat one and the other a round knob? As far as I know on that series two sticks on the right side of the seat, The round one should be for the three point and the flat one for the remotes. The only JD that I know of that used two levers for the three point was the M models but I could be mistaken about that. I hope that helps, I'm suprised no one else responed yet, kind of interesing.JIM
