My B is hard to start cold or hot. Once I get it running it runs smooth. I'm new to this tractor and not sure if it's me or the tractor with the problem. It appears to be easy to flood with to much choke. Any help would be appreciated.

This may or may not help you, but may help anyone out there with a neg ground going to the battery box in the seat. Since some seats have adjustment provisions, they can slide--meaning the connection from the seat/battery box to the frame can be faulty. So, if you have starting problems with a JD around this year model, make sure your neg goes to the frame and not the seat box

I have a '52 B that I recently bought and at first, I had the same trouble. Make sure you have fresh gasoline, a good battery with clean connections and pull the plugs to make sure they are not fouled. It would be a good idea to go ahead and replace them. I replaced my plugs with Autolite 388s. They seem to be the preferred plug from the researching I have done. Also, My B does not like a lot of choke. Pull it out an inch or so when starting and push all the way in once it fires. It is also a good idea to turn the gas off at the sediment bowl when stopping the tractor and let it run out of gas. I have found that this practice makes starting much easier the next time. After doing these things to mine, it starts right up every time! Good Luck!

By the way, Have you changed the oil, and transmission "gunk" yet?

Thanks Jason and Russ. I will try all the above including new plugs. I did replace the battery, neg term end and the possitive ground cable this weekend. I just bought this tractor 2 weeks ago today. I haven't had the pleasure of the oil & lube yet. This is my first REAL tractor! Thanks again

If this tractor has the Wico distributor, the coil inside may be getting weak. Other things to check, make sure sparkplug wires have solid wire, not resistor type. These tractors are easy to flood hot or cold. Russ
