what is the price for a 1960 730 diesel? looks a little ruff. i have found one for 3900 dollars it does not have fenders, but thats no problem i can get those. has factory widefront, needs new paint and probely sopme new tires. im looking to use it for antique tractor pulling and farming.it will be used to pull a wheel rake and a 9' haybine. what are some of the things i need to look for on here? is electric start and has new batteries. ahs almost 4000 origional hours on it. is it worth it or not? i would greatly appriciate your help this has been my dream tractor for quite awhile but have never ben able to afford one. thanks john2510-3020

i am not sure if it has 3 pt but i think it does. it is a row crop model has starter not poney motor. my neighbor owns 2 cylinders plus(big john deere 2 cylinder salvage yard) down here in missouri so i thought i would ask him about it. if it all checks out thne i might go aheead and buy it. i have been looking for 2 years for a resonable 730 and none have ever been in my range. i do plan on useing it more for farming then pulling, i know a little about diesel bu t not enough. i ahve heard that when it comes to fixing a 2cyl. it cost more then to go get a good used 4 or 6 cyl. is this true? i have a little moneyt put aside for my "little projects." thanks for the help guys. and andy i hope you get that g. john2510-3020

I picked up one in Ohio the first of June and paid $6800 for it. It is pretty and has only 4200 hours but still needs work. The electrical system does not work and it has oil leaks galore. I do not think it is hitting right either, it has a little black smoke all the time. I'm going to look at the injectors and the fuel system. You can see pictures of it under the Tractor Photos in the Gallery at the left side of the screen. You can either search by 730 or search by Joel Williams and you can see my whole collection. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. Joel

John, If it starts Ok with starter and sounds reasonable(no flywheel clatter) then I'd buy. The wide front is probably worth $1000 to $1200 itself. I just finished a 730D electric. It didn't sound to bad but governor clatter. In tearing down we decided to do valves, rings, reface head, fix governor, New injectors and tips(ouch $$$$) etc. I paid $2350. for tractor then about $1700. for parts and $2000. for hired labor. It is one tremendous tractor now. I will paint myself. Hope this helps.

the weakest area on these tractors is the flywheel, many have spline wear and are hard to maintain, some people use a repair kit. Those require a machined flywheel cost about $700 and also the transmission take a beating. A couple of years ago I went through one for a friend and used parts were about $1000. Most of those tractors ere used hard....I'd be sure to check out throughly as a couple of slips and you have a problem. Power steering is not too hard to work out.....

Does it have a 3PT hitch? If it does then I think it's about as good a deal as you will find. I would try to check out the power steering, the fuel injection, and the electrical system as much as possible. All three of these are items you can spend quite a bit on to fix. Sometimes these things "eat" batteries so that might be why there are new batteries in it. My advice would be to get someone who knows 2cyl deisels to have a look at it for you. I know it's hard to be objective when something tempting comes along.

On the surface it sounds reasonable but if you have a buddy that knows about 2 cyl diesels I would have him have a look at it and drive it in all gears and possibly pull some implement so you know if its still got something left.

The elect start is a good choice as all you need to do is get good batteries and starter which will be a lot cheaper than maintaining a pony motor. Make a good ispection of what is needed and then price out where you will end up in total cost. Once you know that you can compare what 730s go for on this web site. Good luck Don
