Can anyone help with this one. I have a 3010 JD deisel and the batteries keep going dead. If it sits for more than a few days the batteries are just about dead. I have replaced the batteries twice. I can't seem to find what its drawing them down. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I,have had problems with batteries going dead ,was there moiture on top of the battery .Sonetimes asystem will over charge or in real hot weather a battery will become wet on the top . Take a volt meter and check the top of the battery . This is done by touching the negtive lead to the ground terminal and the poistive a long the top of battery . If you get areading I, found this to be the problem it sure kill a battery.

A neighbor had a 3020 with a 12 V system that was doing the same thing. After a lot of grief he found out someone had altered the stand-bolts supporting the operator's platform (removed one or more of the spacers). The underside of the platform was too close to the battery posts. Proximity, coupled with debris was apparently sufficient to drain the batteries over time. He cleaned it up and repositioned the platform. End of problem.

Heres my $.2. I would bet that the right battery is the only one running down. The left (blue circuit)is controlled by the switch and the right(brown circuit) is hot all the time. I once had a 4010 that we fought for 2 years. It ended up being a short in the starter fields. They had coroded and were shorting to ground. Use a test light and hook from the right battery positive post to ground and taking a small hammer and hitting the starter it would come and go.The short is small and the repair shop will tell you the starter is ok. A new set of fields will take care of it. the generator can do the same thing.

I had the same problem with my 3010 diesel and I converted the 24 volt starting system to a 12 volt starting system. That was the end of my problem. My JD service manager says that he has converted most of these tractors to the 12 volt. The conversion kit at JD is around $430. which includes a starter motor and an alternater.I've heard this a very common problem.

I have a 3020 Diesel which will do the same thing if I leave the cables connected. I elminated the so called "floating ground" by installing a 24volt alternator which improved the charging but there is still a discharge path somewhere. Also had the starter rebuilt which makes it turn over easier. I am sure the problem is in the switch or the under dash wiring. I have found it easier just to disconnect one battey post. If I used the tractor every day it would start every time so the leak is slow. Sometime later JD changed the system to 12volt and 2 batteries in parallel. I considered converting to that setup but decided to keep what I have when I checked on the price of the starter. The 24 volt system is stronger and worth keeping if you can keep it working. The amp hour capacity of batteries you can buy now are much higher too. If you want to find the problem and cure it testing each component one at a time and tracing each wire will likely be necessary. I would be interested in knowing how you progress.

I will also be interested in any response's. I have a 730 diesel that does the same thing. Like your 3010D it has the 24 volt system. I know the generator works and I traced the entire wiring diagram recently during restoration. I did notice after plowing all day that one battery had bubbled at least some acid out. These systems really don't technicaly have a ground do they? You have a small ground wire to one battery so lights will work. I also put in a new switch and the generator indicator light works correctly also. Just can't figure what draws battery down while sitting.

I agree...electrical can be frustrating. Try this: Disconnect the batteries after you know they are charged and working. If after a few days if they are still charged, you indeed still have current flow after the tractor is shut off.

The hard part may be finding it. It is possible that the current leak may be through the generator, voltage regulator or starter. So, try disconnecting these one at a time and find if the batteries still go down. It's kind of a long process, but the problem can be isolated this way.

Since the batteries go down slowly, you do not have a direct short circuit.

The other way to do it is to use an ammeter and find out where the current (amperage) is flowing after the key is shut off.

Best of luck...let us know what you find so when we have the same thing happen, we'll have a place to start.

Nothing more frustrating than an electrical problem. I am not familiar with the 3010, but here is my opinion anyway. First, from what you say, I assume you can park it with a full charged battery and several days later the battery is down. There has to be some circuit that is leaking to ground. If it were a short to ground, most likely it would blow a fuse. When the key is turned off, all circuits should be interupted. However, a short which would leave some device powered up even with the switch off would cause the drain. It is also possible that the switch is bad and not completely breaking a circuit when the key is off. You will definately need a wiring diagram of your tractor and a volt/ohm meter to trouble shoot your problem.
Second possibility, if you start your tractor, drive it for some amount of time. Then you park it and go back several days later and it won't start, it may be that the alternator is not charging and actually runs the battery down while you are driving it.

we have a 4010 that we used to have to disconnect the cables. It turned out the regulator was bad.

Try running it then disconect the ground cable then go back in a few days and see if she'll fire.
