I recently picked up a cast iron tractor seat from an Amish farm. It has some interesting things cast into the part of seat where you sit. First of all the seat is latticed or "webbed", it has a large deer cast into it as well as the letter "J" on left and "D" to right of deer. Additionally, a large year "1847" is cast into the seat below the deer. In reading a little about the company it seems like it started more around 1837 so I was wondering if anyone could tell something about this seat ("what it came off of"), was it made in 1847 or does this year signify something else, and finally what kind of value this item may have... although I am not sure I would sell it. Thanks very much in advance for your help!

Stop and think about this one for a minute----John Deere wasn't building anything in 1847 that required a seat!!! Nor is 1847 a particularly significant year for John Deere. You've been had, pal.

Mike; Check out the upcoming auction at this address; www.nixonauctioneers.com It is listed for Sunday the 22 I believe. It is a collection of seats. You may even see one of yours or be able to find someone who belongs to that association of seat collecters. Best of luck and I hope you got a rare original.

John Deere never made a seat as you describe. I hope you did not pay 700+ that the first one on ebay sold for!!! KNOW what you are buying!

Is the deer facing the right instead of the left as is typical of John Deere products? If so, there have been quite a few of these with that description show up on Ebay. The first one I saw went for big bucks, and then there seemed to be a flood of them. I think that they are new, not original. Go over and search Ebay and you'll see what I mean. I hope you didn't fork over a bundle for it!
