Thanks for the info regarding the floorpan screws. I have another item I am looking for for the 1949 JD A. The gear that wraps around the outside of the flywheel for the starter is worn in a couple of places. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement gear or whould we have to get a whole new flywheel?

You can reverse the ring gear, pull start the tractor and use a weld grinder to make a bevel on the spinning ring gear. Don't get your clothes or hair caught! Heat it evenly with a torch to get it off, heat it in a "campfire" on the ground to get it back on.

my experience on about a dozen tractors is to take a small grinder with a real thin or small cutting disk and dress the gear teeth. Then angle and cut the engage bevel on the teeth. Takes a little time but works fine. The starter gear has plenty of contact area, however the tractor usually was starting on a certain area and that why you getting the engaging damage or wear.

Keith, the last time I checked at the local JD dealer they could get a new one. You have to pull the fly wheel the change it, If it was mine i'd mark it, knock it off, move it 1/4 turn and replace it. If a new one is extreemly high, and you have a salvage yard in your area, see if they would sell you just the ring gear. luck

unfortunately another flywheel is needed. Try www.oldjd4u.com prolly not listed on their site but e-mail them, they can help you out.
