I have the new brake pads for my 1950 John Deere B. there is a slight problem though... It seems that the rivets that hold them onto the shoe are somethign that I don't have a tool for and it seems every hardware store in the area doesn't have a tool for. How should I put these on?

Thanks,

Karl

Karl,
I used Cooney's technique and it worked like a charm, although the pads are fragile and you have to be a little careful when you handle them. It is easier with two people, one can hold the brakes and shoes in place while the other person uses the hammer and transfer punch. I had my daughter help me and it worked great!
Good Luck!

A few years ago I bought a used riveting tool just for this purpose, it mounts on the wall and pulling the lever "sets" the rivet. If you are in the south west Michigan area come on over and use it. Bob

I also use Clooney's method, however if you can get someone to help, use a torch and heat the rivets on the back side...this helps...if you just hammer the rivets down you may split the new pad...the right device was a machine, preset to avoid to this...I used a point punch after heating and this spread the rivet out then I used a ball pien hammer....

karl, I usually clamp a flat ended punch (the same diameter as the head of the rivet) in a vise then set the shoe with rivet & lining on top of the punch with the curvature of the shoe facing up, then I use a 5/16" transfer punch & hammer to lightly set the rivet at each attachment hole, then after all rivets are lightly set (if the first few are set too tight the last few might not line up)I go back & set all the rivets tight.
