I'm picking up a 1951 JD model B (gas) today and wondered if lead needs to be added to the gas. The person I'm buying it from says he just adds a small amount of mystery oil to the premium gas he burns. Is this a viable solution or will this cause problems? The tractor is in sweet condition but does smoke a little.

The lead was used to luber. the valve guide ,seat and valve face. MYSTERY OIL and two cycle oil will help with the upper cylinder parts . The lead additives do not mix as well as mystery oil or two cycle oil thus not giving you an even burn so you lose money for effort .

Tom, about the only time you will have to add a lead substitute (you can't buy an actual lead additive anymore) to the fuel on that B is if you are working it hard for extended periods like plowing or anything that will run it wide open on the governor. Just playing or grading the driveway won't work it hard enough to hurt the valves. Even if you don't use a lead additive when working it hard all that will happen is some valve recession & eventually burnt valves (that will take many hours of hard use to show up). there is nothing wrong with using a little Marvel Mystery oil in each tankfull as it keeps the carb from rusting inside & helps the cranking compression after it sits for a while. The premium gasoline is not needed & actually starts harder in a low compression engine.

I add a little 2-cycle oil to my B's gas. I don't get real scientific about it, just a glug or two with a jug of gas. I don't know that it makes any difference, but it can't hurt anything and it's made to burn cleanly in a combustion chamber. I agree with Taylor, you are better off without lead unless you have to have it.

A contentious topic with many opinions. The removal of lead has only affected airplane engines & the like which operate hot & contious at high power ratings. It's too difficuilt to approve hardend valve seats so low lead fuel remains in use. For you tractor enjoy the longer plug life & reduced combustion deposites from unleaded.
