My JD 40 has very little brakes. Is this a common problem with these old tractors? Can this be a difficult repair?

Joe, what model 40 are you talking about. To answer your question the M-40-420 can be a bit of a problem to get the brakes working correctly but can be done. On my personal 40-S the brakes work smooth & strong enough to lock a wheel in your bare feet. On the 40-S,W,& U the final drives will have to be removed & probably new disks, balls & maybe have the slots that the balls work in reworked with a ball end die grinder stone. The final drive housing that the disk works against should be de-glazed & even roughed up some as well as the apply plate. If all the oil leaks into the final drive housing are repaired & the job done correctly those brakes work good, a little noisy but good.

It is a 40-S. Sounds like a pretty major service, especially for a novice. I would have to leave this for a pro...any takers in the Winston-Salem, NC area?

Joe, actually with a good manual & the help of this board it is not a difficult repair, just time consuming & you will need good jacks & safety stands. You are going to have a hard time finding a qualified person to repair those brakes, you need someone that has done them before & most of the repair people that are out there now are young & haven't worked on those old 40-S brakes. If you find someone qualified he will probably have a gray beard.

I have a 40W, where the disk brakes are in the 'Final Drives'. I had brakes that were almost worthless, so I installed brand new disks. I was very disapointed to find that the new brakes aren't much better. I guess the design isn't as good as the drum brakes that they put on the A's, B's, G's, etc.

Thane, actually the disk design of the 40 series brakes are better than the A,B,G , when they are working correctly they will lock a wheel with very little foot force. Just putting in new disks usually won't make them work like new though. The actuating steel disks & housing surfaces must be de-glazed & all the oil has to removed from the metal parts. The balls & slots in the actuating disks must be in good condition & allowing the actuating disks to apply pressure to the brake disks with enough friction to apply more stopping force as the actuating disks start to rotate.

Clooney, You are right, I only put new disks in, I did not deglaze anything. They do work, just not as good as my Dad's G, or my brother's 730. Maybe one day when I get some 'free time', I'll take the brakes apart and work on them some more. Thanks!
