Sounds like you need carb work..Go to Roberts Carb web site and check out the diagram for drilling out passages for your carb...You will need to purchase long drill bits..Worked well for me.

Mine did the same thing until i drilled out the carb passages, the governor is trying to compensate for the carb. Another thing is every tractor is differant but you will need to experment with you choke and throttle settings to make your hand starting possible. Mine works best at full choke and 1/4 throttle pull the flywheel slow 2 times then it pops right off when cranked hard on the 3rd revolution....But then yours might be differant...just keep expermenting..

I vote with Barry. To run any engine, you need fuel, timing, compression and air. Air is usually not a problem and you claim to have all the rest working. Just because you have fuel to the carb doesn't mean fuel to the cylinders though. Check to see if the spark plugs are wet with gas after cranking a few times. Probably not, and Barry may have the solution. Mine didn't need this, so can't endorse the advice, but sounds good.

Also to check is how good the spark is. Good hot spark or very weak? A weak one will work, but will need help to get going (what you have).

Good luck.

The level of the float is important, but I think makes more of a problem for running at full speed than starting. Not easy to adjust the carb if the gas is not feeding into the jets at the right rate. Not sure about this, though. Maybe someone else can add to it.

Exhaust back pressure? Too much is bad (plugged up exhaust). Too little is no problem at all. Running without a muffler is fine.

Many thanks Mike,
My thoughts were that there is either too much or not enough fuel in the bowl When I do have it running it semms as though the governor is surging alot, meaning that it revs up and idles down over a broad range. As more than normal. could that be part of the problem?

thanks mike could the levle of the float have anythig to do with it? what about exhaust back pressure, would not having a muffler pose a problem?
