Easy to take apart, un-adjust brakes, remove the cotter key and remove the big nut. Slide Drum and shaft assy. out. Inspect and clean the adjusters, Inspect the brake shoes and return springs. Should be easy to find your problem. I would also suggest your remove the brake pedal and lubricate the shaft, so the return springs will have no problem getting the pedal to return.

A large cotter should have been thru the nut, but never the less if you have the big nut off, then the shoes are stuck in worn part of the drum. Generally when you back off the adjuster this will pull the the shoes out of the worn part of the drum. Russ

i think it is full of grease. if i hammer on a piece of wood, that is placed on the big nuts bolt, would this separate the drum from the rest of the unit. or would it just remove the gear at the other end.any other solutions any one.

Sorry I thought you had a model A, not an R. My fault. Most JD'S brakes are about the same, but some have the drum nut on the outside, Late Model B and Model 70. Others have the removable gear behind the nut. If the nut is on the outside, then just the drum comes off when you remove the nut. but may be rusted pretty bad. Where is the nut outside or inside? I will call one of my friends in the a.m, and get back to your. Russ

Use plenty of rust buster around shaft and apply some localized heat to the drum, but don't overdue it, so some tapping, it should come off.
