440 Direction Reverser Problem

I just rebuilt the engine on a 440IC, but now seem to have a problem with the direction reverser. After about 15 minutes of hard pushing, something in the drive train begins to slip. When it does, usually there is also a whining noise (not grinding). If I keep the load low enough, then there is no slipping. But after about an hour, I have to stop since the lightest load results in slipping. After it cools down the next day, it works OK again for awhile. I adjusted the clutches in the reverser and changed the fluid (I used Dextron III instead of the Type A in the manual - Is this OK?), but still no help. Is there any other trick to prevent this problem. If I have to rebuild it, I heard that the reverser can be replaced with a solid shaft. If so, how do I get one - is there a JD Part Number or does it have to be fabbed. Thanks.

I have a 440 I tractor with loader & hoe. the direction reverser is not even connected anymore. i would like to rebuild the reverser but, i an haveing trouble locating a rebuild kit for the direction reverser and maybe other parts that i may need. the tractor, hoe, and loader work fine, i just want to use the reverser. the tractor now has 1 forward & 5 reverses. someone jimmy rigged the reverser into one position to be able to drive the tractor at all, but i want the full use.

The ears are torn off of the clutches in the reverser. All you need is 50 dollars worth of clutches and to rebuild the assembly.. If you need the part number. Email me..

are you sure that your steering clutches aren't slipping take the covers off the top and watch and see if you can see movement in there when it's slipping good luck
