My 620 power steering seems to work ok if you turn it slow, but if you try to turn fast it resists. Think the seals in the pump were recently replaced and the pressure is set up as high as it will go. Appreciate any ideas.

I WORKED ON ONE ONCE THAT WORKED BUT NOT QUITE RIGHT.
HAD IT ALL A PART MANY TIMES BEFORE WE TRACED THE PROBLEM TO SHIMS. WE WERE JUST PUTTING BACK THE SAME NUMBER OF SHIMS AS WE WERE TAKEING OUT AND IT WAS NOT ENOUGHT.
ORDER F 1706R FOR BETWEEN THE UNIT AND THE PEDISTAL AND F1648R STEEL SHIMS FOR THE WORM GEAR BEARINGS. ITS ADD AND TRY AND ADD AND TRY AGAIN.
ITS THE CHEAPEST AND EASY SO START THERE.

I've renewed about 7 of these units and have yet to find that the pump was the problem. The pins hold the vanes in the pedistal will break and the rectangle seals will be worn allowing the pressure to go by, you need to overhaul the pedistal first....

get a power steering book from John Deere for
the 2-cylinders. Make your adjustments with the front wheels nearly off the ground by putting a
jack under the frame. Make sure first that you have new PS oil. Use JD oil only.

Have you checked the pressure with a gauge? The pump pressure needs to be at spec or very close, otherwise it doesn't matter what you do to the rest of the system. Many of these systems are running around with as many washers as will fit against the relief valve spring, but if the pump is shot, that doesn't make any difference. You have to check it warmed up to get a good reading. Unfortunately, many tractors with this system were used as "yard" tractors for years and the steering systems were totally neglected. If the pump has been run dry or it has had water[condensation] run through it for a while, most likely it's done for. It doesn't take much wear for the pump to be ruined. Hope this helps and good luck.

Control (?) valve needs adjusting. (maybe more, I am a rank beginner, but the guy that helped me carries most of the needed part #S in his head. We overhauled the pump and unit in my 820 and it would jerk the wheel out of you hand when first assembled. Had to take out one piece and reinstall, was a sinple job. Send me a note and address and I can send you more detail. My Service manual is out in the shop and the shoes are off.

you probably need to rebuild the pedistal...put new van seals in. Probably fluid is going by the vans...
