The 8V battery is dead again. It starts fine if I charge it up. I grounded a screw driver against the seat frame of the B and the ground terminal
of the battery and it charges 10 Amps when the battery is dead. At first it went back to zero, but if I do it a couple times it stays up for
longer periods of time. Does the battery have internal resistance that makes it charge?. I adjusted the spring on the regulator so that it puts out 8.25V for my 8V battery. Did I do fine, or did I screw it all up? The gen and reg are all 6 V.

You don't say how old your battery is. I just had a similar problem with my 12v. It would charge up with the charger, but after a couple days, it would not turn over the engine any more. Finally, it quite charging at all. The charger would click up to 10 amps and immediately fall back to zero. It would keep retrying, but never succeed. My battery was 4 years old, so it was at it's life span. Got a new battery, and problem is solved.
You can take the battery to a parts store and they can check it for you. May save a lot of time troubleshooting something that is not really bad.

Dennis, make sure the ground cable is not corroded & has a known good connection at each end & the battery box has a good "clean" connection to the tractor frame then set the regulator charging voltage to 8.8-9.4 volts (8.25 is too low to keep an 8 volt battery up) There isn't any resistance in a battery to make it charge ( a battery acts more like a current stabilizer to even out voltage in the charging system). Make sure the battery is installed with the correct ground polarity (should be positive ground) and that the generator is polorized for that ground polarity. You will have to set the "cut-out" relay points to close at a higher voltage (probably around 8.5 volts, if it is left at 6.4 volts the 8 volt battery will keep it closed & run the battery down when the tractor isn't running. (to test: with the tractor not running & the 8 volt battery "fully" charged pull the generator belt off & see if the generator trys to motor, if it does then the cut-out is set too low. If more info is needed post back.
