Should the radiator core be painted Black or Green? Also, some of the fins are bent. They make a special tool to straighten them. Anyone know of a way to do it without getting the tool?
Thanks in Advance
Frank

I agree about straightening with a needle nose. I have always been told to cover the radiator core with paper and keep the paint off the core as it affects the cooling ability. If anything, just a real light coat of black.

Frank, I have had good luck using a straight piece of steel sheet metal(about 1/8" thick & 2" wide) cut to the same length as the inside width of the rad core. I hold the steel in the core at the same angle as I want the fins to be then use a gasket scraper to drag along the top of the fin & contour it to the flat steel, it leaves a slight ripple effect that looks like the original core & does one fin at a time. Before using this method I have to use a duck bill needle nose pliers to sort of straighten the really bad & bent spots. The whole process isn't fast but makes a good looking rad when done. I have a rad fin straightening tool but it doesn't do a good looking job (it makes the fins functional, they just don't look very good)

Green, a pair of needlenose pliers would work...

Hope this helps!

Thanks Karl. I thought of the pliers. I was hoping for something a little faster. Oh well I'll give that a try

A little word of advice learned from restoring my B. It's always better to take your time and do it right the first time. I don't know how many times I've come back and redid something as I thought it was ashoddy job. I'm not anal about it, I just don't want my B breaking down or wearing out or soemthing due to my craftsmanship.

Good luck with your H!

Thanks,

Karl
