Valve guide clearance is very important on these engines. I took mine apart for oil smoke and to make a long learning experience story short, found out that all it would have needed was correctly reamed valve guides. Don't just assume that the guys at John Deere will do it right either. If they are done right they DON'T smoke.

I rebuilt mine a few years back. Got most everything from JD. What it really nedded was rings,(1/4" gap),and valve guides. Had a guy make mine out of bronze to fit close tollerance to my valves. The guys at a motorcycle shop had the small valve seat cutting equipment. and the valves were faced using conventional auto equipment. They said the seats cut like butter so you better find some fuel with lead. The parts man at JD said "they ALL smoke", I said "this one isn't going to smoke" and it doesn't. It's a really cool engine and HEAVY! Do your clutch and trans. too. (pony)

I haven't rebuilt an 830, but I did do one for an
R. I found my parts through JD. We have a
machine shop near here that turned my crank. He
had all the info, and got the bearings. Its' not
hard. About like building a LARGE lawn mower
engine. Get a repair manual and have fun. kkreek
