How hard is it to put a GM alternator on a
JD 50. I just bought a 50 that hasn't been run in 4 or 5 years and the regulator and wiring are missing from the generator.

Is it just a matter of minor bracket modifications?

Also what make, year, etc GM alternator are we talking about? Amperage rating?

Is a JD 50 negative ground?

Thanks Mike Cates

OK, I'm convinced -- I'll just rewire with the generator. Thanks for the input.

Just put the proper regulator on. All 6v & 12V generator equiped Deere's were positive ground. Single wire alternator can drain batteries & charge only after being reved way up after each startup. Check the ignition coil, odds are a tinker has wired it negative to the distributer which weakens the spark. Set the voltage to 14.5v at fast idle measured at the battery with lights on. Set the cut out to open only at shut down or slow idle. For parade duty or putting around, change the pulley to a smaller one.

Mike, I tend to agree with Chuck that you'll have enough current to keep the battery charged if you just get a new regulator and stick with the generator. Unless you plan on running lights or adding some electrical accessories, keep it original and go with the generator. The 50 has a negative ground.

You must have misspoken the 50 uses a positive ground system.

Went home last night and looked at the battery cables on my 50. Sure enough, my tractor has been operating since before I got it 6 years ago with a negative ground. It's humbling to be wrong sometimes, but that's when I do most of my learning. When I put it all back together, I'll make sure the electrical system has the proper ground polarity. Thanks for everyone's feedback. Together we'll keep these tractors running for a long time to come.

Clarification: I intended to say "Unless you plan on running lights all night...". The 50s all came with lights.

the one wire GM alternator will work, however you will have to have a 12 V supply switch.....personally I wouldn't recommend an alternator...I have a 50 and the later model generator works very well....all you need is a new regulator...polarize it and you're off....why not keed the JD a JD.....
