Half a dozen Model B head questions

I took the head off of my newly aquired, first ever John Deere (Model B, 1951), and noticed a small lead ring under each head nut. I can understand where you might need one on the center head stud that feeds the rocker arm oiler, but are they really required on all of the studs? If so, what purpose do they serve, other than make the head hard to get off. Also, I have been told I should replace the pushrod tubes in the head, as they will probably start to leak. Is any type of sealer used on these tubes? Any installation tips would be appreciated. Also, should I put anything on the head gasket when I reassemble it? What are the head nuts torqued to, and do I need to retorque them? Thanks!

The lead washers seal the stud so water don't leak into the valve cover. The head studs go into the water jacket. The pushrod tubes should be replaced. A year from now do you want to do this again? If they leak you will have water in the oil, lots! What kind of head gasket, The one from Deere is steel and should use permatex #1 on. Felpro style that has a sealer on it (the blue stuff) no sealer at all. Don't have book on torque in front of me so can't answer that one. Sorry. Just whatever it is don't over torque the head. The Deere gasket will need retorqueing. The other ones don't need it, but I would check it.

My 1950 JD B has BRASS pushrod tubes. Looking at various JD B cylinder heads at swap meets I find that earlier JD B heads have STEEL pushrod tubes that rust through. The last part number head used on JD B's did NOT use separate pushrod tubes. They are cast one piece with the head.

In addition to what Will said, the lead gasketsmake it easier to torque the head bolts more evenly; an important matter. You probably should buy the I & T manual for your tractor. It's got a lot of important advice, and specs. Look at this web site:http://equinox.shaysnet.com/~rainbow. It's dedicated to B's. Maybe it has the torque values.
