I had a machine shop remove the twisted off manifold bolts from my JD B head, I told them about the water jacket if you drill to deep, I notice the tractor leaking some water by the manifold, My guess was as I had figured, I removed the bolts and water came out of each bolt hole...NOW I need some good advice on what I can do to repair/stop the leak.

why don't you do it right, pull the head back off and get the original JD studs, use some sealer and bottom them out to the shoulders, fit your manifold up, then reinstall. There is no shortcut to doing a job right.

I have 1938 and 1940 B's. I installed the manifolds with bolts so I could remove the manifolds without removing the heads if I ever wanted to. I put some high-temp gasket sealer on the bolts and I have not had any problem with leaks. My B's are made with the threaded holes for the manifold through to the water jacket, so this might not be a mistake by the machine shop. They sealed them up with white lead at the factory. [whatever that is]

White lead was a common pipe sealer and also an indegredient in paint at one time. Currently it's available as a commercial product called "Rectorseal", a mixture of white led and oil. It comes in several grades, the most popular being #5 which is non-setting and is used in boiler rooms for joining steam piping; I have used it on 2" gas pipe and not had a leak, somethng that can't be done with teflon tape. If it absolutely, positively must not leak and still come apart 30 years from now, I'd recommend Rectorseal. 'Bout $5 for a small can at most plumbing supply or mill supply stores.

Use Studs, like the ones that were orginally installed. It is not uncommon for water to come out of those holes when the studs are removed. Some people replace the studs with bolts, but the water/antifreeze will seep up around the threads. I believe on the B they are 7/16 course thread. Don't get the studs to stick out any more that necessary or you may have problems re-installing the manifold with interference with the fan shaft. Use permatex #1 for good measure. Russ
