I've never considered owning a tractor older than the early 60's, but I know I love to hear the old Johnny-Pop pop. I stopped at my neighbors today because he has a great looking B sitting by his driveway. It obviously hasn't ran for a while, and there is no can over the intake or exhaust. I hoped maybe I could buy it for $100, but he nearly slammed the door in my face.

He said he parked it about 2 years ago, and sometime since then, the cans have blown off, and at least one rear tire has gone bad. Otherwise, it appears to be in great condition.

I have to assume the engine is bad from water, and maybe the carburetor. What do you 'experts' think it's worth as is?

unless it has the original roundspoke wheels or its on original steel or something about it is rare wait theres a ton of JD B's around its just finding one for a good deal... my uncle paid $250.00 for his farmall M they said the head was cracked but he had my grandpa take it all apart and the head was fine the people didnt have a flapper on the exhaust or they didnt have a can on it, if you wait a while youll find one that runs good that has been taken care of that someone just needs to get rid of.

James.
I can't imagine why he thinks it is worth more than a hundred dollars when he doesn't think it is worth the time to go and put a can over the stack to preserve it. YOur offer was about right, but he'll let it rot for a couple more years waiting for "the big killing" that won't happen, then pay someone to haul it away. There isn't much more common sense in tractor trading than there is in any other aspect of life.In defense of your neighbor, if he wanted to sell it he would have put a "For Sale" sign on it. I stopped at a place the other day that I had been driving by for years. Old equipment is strewn all around. I asked the guy if he had anything to sell, and his reply was "I can't sell it because I use all of it." Well, I know for a fact that most of the stuff hadn't even been TOUCHED for years. We all have our little idiosycrisies, I guess.

I paid $500 for mine in pretty much the same condition. It was a 1950, it sat for 2 and a half years due to a bad float in the carb. Ask him what he wants for it. Check out the Price link to the left, that should also help in determining what to ask

Hope this helps!

He said he would take $900. I wasn't going to post that till someone like yourself through out a number for me to compare to. Thanks

Karl, did your tractor sit outside with the intake and or exhaust uncovered? If so what was involved with getting it going? Did you have to tear the engine apart?

The exhaust was covered, although it didn't do much good, the lid over the crankcase was unbolted and water got in through there and through the intake, LOTS of water. I really didn't know what I was getting into with it being my first restore project. If you plan to restore it I STRONGLY suggest buying the videos they offer here (engine rebuild and tune up video for John Deere Tractors) as well as the Operators/Parts/ and service manuals BIG HELP. YOu might or might not have to rip apart to the engine, if you do it doesn't take much to get to that point, the great thing about these old deeres are that they are simple machines. They were designed so that any idiot (like me) could work on them... I could go on and on for days. As far as the price, I'd check the machine over very closely see what it needs etc. check out the price listings to the left, and see how your compares, maybe use that as a negotiatign point.

If you have questions, e-mail me at [email protected] I love my B. I don't know everything but have been learnign a lot as far as the tractor itself as well as history etc. it amazes me.

Hope this helps!

Karl
