I posted the following message several days ago. Since then I have visited my JD dealer and the only cap his computer caughed up was a "replacement" part number - the cap looks like any cap you would find on your car or truck radiator - totally unsuitable as a reproduction replacement! Soooo... I'm still looking for suggestions as to a source for a nice reproduction cap!

Previous message: "I need a new radiator cap for my '48 G. Can anyone suggest a source for a good reproduction cap? Maybe I can get a functional cap from my friendly local JD dealer, but so often their new parts are not good reproductions in appearance. Thanks, John"

Thanks again, John

Check out the summer tractor shows for a vendor selling JD reproduction parts next show season if all else fails, that is where the original style radiator cap for my styled "A" came from.

happy hunting!

I tried the JD dealer just west of Monroeville OH, (near Bellevue on Rt. 20). My '48 G has a pressurized system. The dealer had a cap that would "work" but it didn't have the big round cover referenced in the other messages in this thread. Therein is my problem - I don't have the original round cover that goes over the cap so I can't make the riveted repair that the others suggest! Hence my search for a complete reproduction cap.

John

I don't know beans about a G, take a look at the cap - does it have a standard radiator cap rivited to the bottom of the G styled top/bonnet? If so you can take the rivets out, get a standard radiator cap and drill the ears and rivet it back to the G bonnet. I would suspect though that the G would have a monster inlet on the radiator.

My Radiator cap on my 49 A came "apart".
I thought I would have to buy one (I was able to find one on the web for $30). But after looking closely, the tension arms were rivited on with brass rivits. I ground them down, knocked the out of both parts and re-rivited it back together with a standard pop rivit gun with aluminum rivits. It seems to work fine, been about 2 months. Good Luck, hope this helps.
