How would you guys compare the #8 Mower with the similar appearing but older #5?

Putt,

Can't remember exactly in my mind's eye, but wasn't that #5 lifted manually with a lever?

Also, I can't remember if it had the break-away like the #8 or not.

As far as the basic mowers were concerned, I think that they were pretty much the same.

Maybe someone will jump in here.

Allan

Dad's came with a foot lift, with the lever used to lock the bar up. Also used for the transport position. Converted lift with a cable on rock shaft before trading for a # 8. Also available was adapter to use hydralic cylinder as a lift. Have one of each, but no #5 as yet.

The #5 could be raised with a hydraulic cylinder and yes, it did have the breakaway. If you struck a solid obstruction, the sickle bar would swing back, out of the way. You reset the mower by backing up.

Ive owned and used both, and although the knife and sections etc are similar, the 8 seemed to run smoother. Of course, for nostalgia and looks the 5 sure matches well to the early lettered series, it was the first non horse mower you know, I have a No. 4 horse and a 2 or 3 I think out in the field. Hi Joe,

It sure will; a sweet little combo in fact. You can knock down a lot of hay in a day with that old # 8.

If you are in heavy alfalfa, you might want to beef up the outer bar divider assy. Heavy hay will break that outer wooden throw.

The hardest part of the whole setup is moving that right rear tire in to give clearance to the mower's inner land divider.

You have to pull the wheel completely in on the axle and then also move the wheel in so it will set on it's outer rim at the lugs (which also have to be moved to the outside of the cast wheel). When it is set up correctly, the tire will be running very close to the clutch drum.

Also, if you have the 9 ft. bar, you might want to have it re-bowed before you start the season.

I used it running wide open in 5th on heavy irrigated straight alfalfa.

as I recall the #8 was the mower of choice for the 50's. With the trailing wheel they would adjust to ground level. This is an excellent mower, uses the side mounted knobs on the drawbar.

Dear Joe, I owned a few 8's some years back, and I recall them fitting several JD's I owned, including any A's and B's and 60 and 70 etc. (didnt have a 50 though) The side of drawbar frame dog mountded ones will fit about anything where you can mount the side mounts to the drawbar frame SO LONG AS THE WIDTH IS CORRECT.

Is yours one of the 2 point mounts which attaches to/around the short cylindrical bars you mount on each side of the drawbar frame????

They may have also made them drawbar mounts like a few of the No. 5 mowers I owned also. The only problem I had on some tractor mounts (the 2 point style) was the length of the PTO shaft if I recall.

If its the 2 point side mount, measure the mounting width in between on the mower, then see what the overall width is of the attached cylindrical to frame mounts (if you have them already) and theres your answer. I have seen the 2 points rigged to fit on 3 pt lift arms also.

#8 mowers will fit the late letter series through the 20 series new gen. tractors for sure.
