I just finished replacing several o-rings, seals, the filter, and screen on my hydraulic system for my 1970 JD 1020 diesel.

My question is: What brands or specifications of hydraulic oil can I use when I refill the system (10 gallons or so) on my JD?

I am about to buy Agway's Hydraulic Oil (~$20 per 5 gallons), but someone mentioned to me that it could possibly damage my system if it was not as good as JD's.

Does anyone know what brands or specs are correct for use in my hydraulic system for my 1020? Will Agway's hydraulic oil work fine?

I was a little surprised to hear that their oil could possibly damage my system.

Just stay away from the cheap stuff. If you use Deere, Mobil, Shell, Chevron, etc.

It's the cheap store brands that cause problems.

While I'm not familiar with the oil you speak of, there is indeed a concern about oil quality. Some (cheap) brands of hydraulic oil will remove the paint from the inside of the main case, and will also affect the brake linings in ways you really don't want to contemplate. While I am quite upset with Mother Deere about a number of issues, pricing being one of them, I will STRONGLY reccommend that you go down to your friendly local JD dealer and purchase a new hydraulic filter and the require amount of Hy-Gard. Yes, it's not cheap, but you won't screw up your tractor's hydraulic system---using the cheap oil is a false economy.

I agree with Stranger. The sludge which used to be the paint on the inside of your transmission will wind up in the filter. Where it will plug it and block your oil flow. As the steering, hydraulics, and brakes all uses that oil flow, not to mention lubrication for the transmission, I also recomend that you head straight to your friendly sales agent for Mother Deere and get the right stuff.

I will follow your recommendations. I just got off the phone with Mother Deere - they want $28.00 for 5 gallons, which isn't too bad.

One thing - I asked the mechanic at JD if they recommended any other brands and he said that they don't recommend any other brands, but that there are other brands that are compatible. I don't really know what he meant by that, but I'll get the OEM JD oil anyway.

Anyone else out there running other brands through their JD with success (or without any problems)?

We use Dryden(Castrol) UTF in our 2240 with loader. We have never had any problems using their oil. It is priced around what you stated that Deere got for their oil, but NAPA will deliver to us. Also have used Dryden(Castrol) 15w40 in all of our diesel engines from JD up to Freightliner trucks. Not uncommon to go 500,000 mi/12,000hr on original engine without oil related problems. Mechanics have told us that they couldn't believe the engine was so clean and not scored considering how old they are.
