Putting my LA back together; new everything I could get from new babbitted rods to new valves. What is best oil to use now? Not to impressed with today's non-detergent oil.

Remember that the LA does not have an oil filter. Using a detergent oil means that all of the junk will be floating around all of the time so be sure to change the oil very often. Using non-detergent oil means that the junk will stick to the side of block, etc. Either is kind of a bummer. I chose full synthetic detergent oil. There is no carbon in synthetic so no worries about buildup. You probably aren't plowing anyway so does it really matter?

I also have a John Deere LA engine that has been completely remanufactured. I haven't started it up yet, but I'm going to use Shell Rotella (a high detergent oil) in it: run it for about 1 hour, change oil and then put Shell Rotella back in it. Now, having said this there are about as many opinions on this subject as there are tractor owners. Hope this helps. AWB
