Is there any way to put power steering on a 40U? I have a Lord loader on mine and it steers real hard. I bought a power steering setup out of any early ford Mustang to try and adapt, but haven't figured out how to do it yet.

A loader on a 40U is an example of something that really wasn't designed to work together. It will cost less time, money & agrivation in the long run trading to a tractor with factory power steering than making a tinker system.

I've l;ooked over a lot of cars in the wrecking yards with that same thought in mind to put power on my 430 with a loader. haven't found one that looks like it would work very well. The old, old (50 ish) fords and chevys had a unit that was activated by pressure on the tie rods, a friend of mine bought one for a ford tractor, that used the same principal, think that kind would work best. you might be able to use a char-lyn unit like they use on a lot of the older farmals, it goes into the steering shaft, not perfect but better than nothing. still puts pressure on the worm gears. other possibility is to get a spinner knob and go to the gym to build up your arm. they can deffinitely steer hard with a loader. a weight on the back helps some.

My Mustang unit works on the tie rods, just that I will have to completely redo the whole steering engineering to make it work. The CharLyn sounds interesting. I have looked at adapting a whole steeing box to the top of the column. That idea has some merit. I will have to keep thinking on it.

I have a 420 with heavy Henry loader.Couldn't steer at all with load in bucket.I use the down power on the loader to steer in tight spots. That is , I put the loader right down, the wheels come off the ground and, presto, power steering. Also I had to build a counterwieght on the back consisting of a welded steel frame bolted to the tractor carrying a 45gal drum full of road gravel.I did have the loader off once and the counterweight almost picked up the front end to the point of being almost undrivable. Also have loaded tires and rear wheel weights. The tie rods can twist up like spaggetti I found but I love this unit a lot.Oh yeah, Ibroke the top link casting from all the weight plus pulling a log which was hooked to the rear of the counter wieght so had to weld a bracket and bolt it on instead. goodluck Duffy.

Duffy, what do you think of 420U WITH power steering and a henry loader (TS4) for 3500? You think I could use it around a small rocky new england farm without having to weight it down either end and avoid the problems you described. The power steering is within the tractor (its a 1956). There is no external pump. What should I look for before I buy???
thanks
