On my JD D I took off the cooling system drain plug on the bottom of the block and there is a huge quantity of loose dry flaky rust inside of it, the metal is not pitted from what I can feel. Does anyone out there know the best way to get this rust out?

I just got my radiator back from the shop. They told me the best thing you can do as far as your cooling system is to not use tap water in your radiator due to the minerals in the water. He said only use distilled water.
Hope it helps,
Ron

Try to flush out as much as you can. If you had the block off the D , you could have it vatted. That will remove alot of the scale. You might have to live with some of the scale which is formed by the chemicals in the water in your area. My D has the same problem and I drain it and try to run a wire around in the drain to clean it out.
