have a 4630 thats "making oil"---after heavy use, the oil level shows above the full mark and the oil is thin. we have had the oil analyzed by a lab and its not fuel or water, which leaves hydraulic oil. the local JD mechanic says he doesnt think so and has no idea what is causing this. I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem or what might be causing it.

transmission/hydraulic oil can enter the engine only from the flywheel area and only with quad range transmission.check your tranmission oil level and dipstick. check transmission breather (filler cap) for cleanliness. david

The most common problem is diesel fuel in the oil. When this happens the gains are very evident. Some signs are that more oil leaks appear because of the thin fuel. If the problem was coolant then after the tractor has set a while you could crack the engine drain plug and see if coolant ran out. If the problem is hydraulic oil I have never seen this, but have some suggestions. The clutch is a wet clutch, by this I mean it is in hydraulic oil. The problem could be the pan gasket because it seals the oil pan from the transmission in the 2 speed area. It could also be the engine rear main seal. Like I mentioned I have never seen that happen. Does your hydraulic oil level seem to get lower? I have seen a rear main seal go out and let the engine put oil in the transmission.

JD mech-----the hydraulic oil level does go down.
there is a minor leak at the break away connections, but i dont think it accounts for all the hydraulic oil loss. we had an oil sample tested, and it did not show an excess of fuel or any coolant. I have noticed an increase in oil leaks on the engine---may have to try another oil analysis to check for fuel again. Thanks for the reply and the info.

If it is diesel fuel you should smell it in the engine oil. Over a day you should notice the engine oil level up around maybe 2 quarts depending on severity of leak. The most common cause of diesel fuel in the crankcase is the fuel transfer pump on the side of the injection pump.
