JD B Roll-A-Matic Wobble in high gear

We recently purchased a 48 B and when in 5th and 6th gear the front wheels start to wobble and you only need to turn the wheel a little to get it to stop. The front seems loose to me. Are there any adjustment or replacement parts to correct this issue?

My '48 A had the same problem, I had checked over the wheel rearings and repacked them, I tore the roll-a-matic down, and found it had some wear in the bushings but not too bad. So next I got into the steering box and adjusted the steering shaft endplay and set the eccentric to minimize the clearance between the worm gear and sector, but here is the problem--the sector is worn more in the "straight ahead" portion than the right or left turn area. If I pull the sector into the worm gear too tightly the steering will be difficult and even bind when I turn sharply either way. I suppose the remedy is a new sector but Ms. Deere don't give them away, so for now I'm trying to get by by setting the sector as tight as possible and still be able to turn the tractor-to the stop if necessary-and not bind in too tight. I've got new Firestone 5.50-16 4 ply tires on and it doesn't wobble at all. Sorry this is so long but hope it helps you.

Check the easiest thing first, are the front tires matched? If one is a different size or just has a lot more wear it can cause this problem. With all the other good advice I think you have the solution here somewhere, good luck. Bob

There are some adjustments for the gears. The roller bearings for the worm shaft use shim gaskets under the cover. There is an eccentric adjustment for the main shaft (I don't know the correct name) that goes up and down the front of the tractor. This eccentric adjusts the steering gear back lash. Also check for worn bushings on that main shaft. The steering gears can also be worn. I think the owners manual for the tractor tells how to adjust the eccentric bushing.

Check for a bent Roll-A-Matic arm. They're hard to spot. Even a tight front end will wobble with a bent arm. Drive the tractor on a hard surfaced road. If the center ribs become scuffed (dark black) it's a sign that it's scooting the tires. The tires will swap traction and wobble like mad. I bought a used arm for my 50 and no more wobble.

My 70 did that when I got it. Try checking the wheel bearings. They might need to be cleaned and repacked and adjusted. Or, you might need new wheel bearings (don't forget the seals). We needed new bearings badly and also went ahead and rebuilt the entire Roll-A-Matic. But try the bearings first.
