Engine / Clutch question...

Ok guys, I'm stuck. I have a '52 AO with a lot of slop between the pulley and the crank. I'm hoping Deere designed the drive disk splines to wear before the splines on the crank. When I pull out the bolt in the center of the pulley, I see where the drive disk and the crank meet, but how do I tell which is worn? Can I mic the splines on the crank and compare them to original? If so, where do look to find out how wide the splines were to begin with? I suspect this job would be easier if I had a good service manual, but I have been told that Deere didn't make one for A series tractors. That can't be true can it? Thanks.

You might try Midland Press for a service manual. They print original JD manuals. Their number is 1-800-522-7448.

I have a '47 A that had your problem. I bought a new clutch disk with a reduced sized center from Denglers, and it fit as tight as a glove. For reasons I can't explain, even the end of the crank and the face of the clutch (where the big washer goes) were in the same plane. The clutch plate was expensive, but if you are going to use the tractor for any work, there isn't a lot of choice. Welding isn't much of an option unless you are pretty skilled...errors with the crank can be very expensive.

Toaster, I'm sure neither the crank splines or the drive disk were ever designed to wear & if the drive disk is kept tight there shouldn't be any wear. If you have a loose drive disk the drive disk is definitely worn & probably the crank also. Look closely at the crank for signs of wear & see if there is more wear on the sides of splines the farther away from the main case you get. I don't know of any place you can get specs on the spline size, but if you call someplace that carries undersized clutch drivers (like Dengler's 1-513-423-4000) they can probably tell you how to tell how much wear you have & what sized driver you need. Maybe someone that has an "A" apart with a good crank will mike the splines & post the size. I have welded up & reworked a 70 & B but have never done an A, so can't help you on size.
