I'm putting my 4010 back together. I've bolted the pressure plate cover on the flywheel. I have the clutch line up tool in, when I remove the lineup tool the pto clutchdorps down a bit. Maybe I'm mistaken, but shouldn't the pto clutch be held firmly in place? Thanks for any input.

A trick I learned back in the mid 80's from a 20 year veteran when I was just starting outwith DEERE is that while you still have your clutch alignment tool in place, wedge a small piece of wood between the clutch cover and the PTO finger. Just enough to hold the disk in place. This helps in joining the tractor together. You still have to rotate the flywheel to line up the splines. When you have the tractor together and start the engine, engage the PTO breifly. This will allow the pieces of wood to fall out. If the PTO still tries to turn when disengaged, shut the engine off and remove the bottom access cover, roll the flywheel over untill you see the finger that still has the piece of wood lodged underneath. Simply extract the piece of wood, put the cover back in place, and you're back in buisiness. Hint: use the smallest piece of wood possible, but big enough to hold enough pressure on the disk. This "trick" has helped me put many of these back together with almost no trouble at all. Good Luck!

Rather than turn the flywheel which may drag the pto shaft with it just grab the pto shaft with
your hand or chanel locks and turn it you can feel
the spline drag by if its not in and you can usually hear the disk move in the clutch if its
aligned.

as jdtech states, roll the flywheel to get the pto shaft to line up with the plate, dont force the engine and rear end together.if you bend the pto plate you will be splitting it again to replace the plate.

Nothing is wrong with your clutch the pto plate should be free if it were held in place the pto would be constantly engaged. When you engage the pto lever the pto throw-out bearing applies pressure to the pto clutch fingers thus engaging the pto clutch. When you reassemble the tractor you will have to roll the fluwheel with a bar to help line up the pto drive disk with the pto input shaft.
