With what you have described, I have doughts that you have a model Y John Deere. the Model Y was nothing more than alot of parts thad Deere bought off other manufactures and put them together to make a tractor. John Deere never sold a Y with a NOVO engine. There were only 2 built with the NOVO and both were repowered with a Hercules NXA. it should also be about the same size as an LA engine, might even look alittle biger with the trans attached. the serial number of a model Y should be on a brass tag on the toolbox that is welded to the rearend housing. it should read (JOHN DEERE TRACTOR MODEL Y SERIAL NO. 112) if it is number 12. John Deere never stamped the frame of any tractor, experimental or not, with a serial number. you should find no part numbers anywhere on the tractor its self, being the only parts that were castiron were the engine, trans, and gears. the entire rearend housing was welded steel, not castiron like the La's. A model Y should have several casting numbers on the engine, all would be 5 digit numbers starting with 62???. the serial number of the engine would also be a 5 digit number starting with 420??. the radiator would have a tag on the back of the top tank thar reads Perfex Radiator Co. The aircleaner would also have a tag on it that would say Vortox Aircleaner, and would also have the model and serial no. of the aircleaner. The trans. is nothing more than a model A Ford Trans mounted directly to the engine bellhousing, not to the rearend of the tractor. the steering box was a Ford model A truck box. The rear wheels were 22" round spoke spreader wheels that had the spokes torched out of and welded a flat plate in the center. if you were to look at a model Y in person, you would think it was a homemade hunk of junk, and the only indication that it was a deere would be the serial tag, and not any part numbers. Now if you have what I have described, Than congratulations, but if not don't let everyone get you overly excited until its authenticated. Good Luck!

I hate to puddle the celebration, but people have cried model Y before to just get some attention. Pictures would be nice, and where was the proof defying tag located? The Y's also had the Ford transmission, if my history serves me correct. If it is a Y, This is like finally caging Big Foot to us tractor nuts.

I've seen a price list from the Columbus Branch listing the "Y" for sale--some were indeed sold, though they were supposed to have been bought back and replaced. If what you've found is indeed a "Y", you've made the John Deere find of the century!!

George T,
Nice find!! I have a paperback titled "Reflections of the Tractor Salesman" by Jim Morrissey, published about 1989, and on page 14 there is a picture of his grandfather sitting on what surely is a Y in Michigan. So, some indeed made it to the field.

Just curious if you would be willing to post a picture of it. I am very interested in the rare tractors and would like to see a Y model. Just wondering if you would be willing too. Thanks

Back in 1936 the wagon works had experimented with an 8hp baby tractor, designated the model "Y" and 24 of theses units had been built, fitted with a NOVO 2-cylinder vertical gas engine. Resulting from the success of these small tractors, a production run of an updated version the model "62" was built in the summer of 1937. This article was in john deere tractors and equipment volume 1, so i guess they did sell those 24??? then made the 62 which i think they made 78. Jack Kreeger of Omaha had the reproduction tractor with an original engine and i think it recently sold for $20,000 so if you have original engine, frame and tranny and serial number you have a very nice part of history and maybe the only 1!

I do believe if you have a real model Y it is the only on ein known existance. I know someone had made a replica with a nova engine(i think that may have been orginal for them) but none are known to exist. should be worth a lot if it is. Kellers in Wis. are big in experimental and rare tractors. ALso i beleive they have the first la and l built.
