I have the one hot wire the runs too the cut out, Right do far? There are three prongs on the cutout. The middle one says batt. So i presume that is where the hot wire goes, right? Then the other two has the letter C and L. I figgured they boath hook up to the other two prongs but i get lots of unnatural spark when trying to hook up. Simplify how to hook the thing up for me. i know there is one prong on bottom. Making 4 prongs all together.

Nick, as usual the clooney and I agree on these thigns and I agree with his answer you got a volatge regulator, not just a cutout, so here are a few more thigns thta may help (or may confuse lol) On some generators, if there are two but unreadable or unmarked (Arm and Fld) terminals out the side, the LARGER one is the Armature which goes to the Arm or Gen terminal on the VR, while the SMALLER terminal goes to Fld on the VR. Arm or Gen on the VR has to get to the generators armature output and Fld on the VR has to go to Fld on the generator. Then, as clooney said, the Bat on the VR is what charges the battery usually through an ammeter. I thought the lower terminal on some VR's was the L that feeds lights but he thinks its the arm ?? so see if its labeled and see where that wire goes. Be sure the generator itself and the VR are getting a good ground and be sure theres a wire to teh ammeter (from bat on VR) that then gets to the ungrounded battery terminal, usually via a wire to the starter post. Good luck John T

The lower terminal could very possibly be the L terminal. I was refering to the wire that comes out of the bottom base of the VR that isn't attached to a terminal. Some older VRs have an actual wire comming out of the bottom of them (that isn't hooked to terminal) that goes to the ARM post.

Yep my friend, I know the types of VR's and wire (just a wire, not a terminal) your talking about, these are tricky over the net with so many unknowns. Hope we meet up in Michigan, I plan to go, but not all 3 days as there are no seminars similar to Waterloo or Gatherign of Green and we are going to California for 3 weeks in August in our motorhome, hopefully to see a son graduate from Marine Boot Camp. Nick, first it sounds like you have a voltage regulator & not a Cut-Out as most cut-outs have only 2 terminals. Tell us what model & year John Deere you have & we will try to help you. Look at the C terminal again & see if it is really G or GEN. Also how many posts are on the generator?

Nick, without the year this is just a guess. The BAT terminal on reg goes to hot wire from ammeter, the L terminal on reg goes to light s/w or ignition load, the GEN terminal on reg goes to A post on gen, the F terminal on reg goes to F post on gen. The wire comming from the bottom of the regulator is probably the wire that goes to the A post on generator (if that wire is there & used there probably isn't a gen terminal on reg.)
