I've got the 3-point hitch finished, pretty much. I'm going to use it to plow my 4-1/2 acres so I can get my bermuda grass planted, then I'm going to take it apart and paint it all the right color. As you'll notice, the lift arms are Ford red. I didn't paint the brackets yet at all, I just bolted them up so they are just bare angle iron.

Those with sharp eyes will notice my real screw-up, I made 2 right-side brackets! Yeah, I drilled the left one on the wrong side but since I need to start disking I'm going to use it while I make another one.

The hydraulic system works great, the disk is a very old 6-ft drag-type that somebody built a 3-point hitch for. It's pretty heavy but the JD picks it up without complaining.

Hope the pictures work, if not I'll repost later. Thanks to those who sent me all the pictures with ideas and suggestions!

Kerry

I looked at your pictures and can find little to criticise; I've a similar setup on my 50, but the forward end of the lift arms pivot at the very rear corner of the drawbar quadrant. I copied this from an aftermarket 3-point kit I found in a junkyard.

I use chains instead of lift links, too but this, even though I have sway-chains between each lift arm and the drawbar has created a few "interesting" moments when an implement gets caught on the tire and the chain goes slack on one side instead of raising the lift arms on both sides. It isn't a pleaseant surprise to find that your bush-hog is climbing up behind your back. Solid links (adjustable) would help prevent this, I think. Mounted plows didn't seem to do well with the chains either.

Kerry, I was wondering how you made the "arms" that attach to the power-trol? I have been looking at making a 3 pt for my b and can't find those arms anywhere. Did you fab or buy them? Looks great though. The lift arms the others were talkin about I saw at TSC for about $25 - $30. Kris

Kris,

I've had several people ask about them, I'll drop you a note. They were on the tractor when I got it, but I've got a design I used on my old A that I used to have. I'll send you a little drawing of it so we don't waste bandwidth. It's not too hard to make, but I do wish I had the original JD arms.

If you ever hook up a 3 pt. PTO implement you may have a little problem, the lift arms are too far back I think. So a PTO shaft wont come up all the way. Maybe you could move them closer to the back axle.

Kerry, JRA's point is right for more reasons than one. Moving the arms in would reduce loading on your hitch, hydraulics, and tractor structure when lifting and carrying your implement. For reasons I can't explain it would also reduce draft. Wiser men than I have said that a work horse can't drag an 80 pound sack of flour at the end of a 100 foot rope. I guess that's why a trailer plow pulls harder than a 3pt lift plow of the same size. Overall your hitch looks great. You've mastered the usual bugaboo of the top linkage very nicely. I hope you don't mind if I steal an idea or two from it sometime.

You're right, I need to check the distance of the moment arm between the front pin and the lift point and also the lift point and the back of the lift arm and compare them to the original. Right now it seems to be lifting the 6 ft. disk just fine, but if it has problems I'll move the lift point farther out.

I also plant to make some stabilizer bars or use chains/turnbuckles as suggested earlier. If I use chains I'll probably go to the middle like the old original, or I might use a set of stabilizer bars and build a bracket to hang down from the outer bolds on the rear of the axle.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys!

Kerry

Kerry--Heres a little tip. Take two short pieces of chain and go from each lower link to the drawbar. This will take the side sway away from you so it doesn't get into the tires. Hopes this helps!! luckydog

Riser arms are off the shelf items at most farm supply stores, TSC, Quality, etc.
Looks like you've got the project under control. Good deal!

Thanks for the info, I'll check their arms and see if they will fit my application. It seems like most of the parts are made for 8n's (like those red lift arms)!

Here is the whole tractor with my old worn out disk behind it. I know it's ugly, but it works. I just got it late last summer, if I don't find any major mechanical problems with it this year maybe next winter I'll paint it.

I can't figure out how to post more than one pix per message, so here's the next one. Oh, yeah, I'm working on the riser arms but for now will use the chain.
