I have a 40C that won't turn left. The lever moves, although it doesn't seem to have the feel of the right lever. Any suggestions before I tear into this?

The steering is a two part action. First the clutches release and then the brake is applied. If, when you pull the lever the tractor engine lugs down then the brake is working, but you have a seized steering clutch. This is a multiplate disk clutch with alternating steel and fiber disks. They don't like moisture and will rust or freeze up from the cold. If no lugging down occurs, then the brake is not working. All kinds of things could be wrong, from a missing pin in the linkage to a broken brake band. I have replaced broken bands with locally made sheet steel ones and then drilled and riveted on new linings. There is an ajustment proceedure for the brake levers. Doing it right does make a difference. When these are right they will turn easily and you can do locked track turns with a very reasonable amount of force on the steering levers. This is what makes these a nice woods machine. My experience is that the clutches are usually not adjusted correctly and the tractors steer way too hard. Too much brake before the clutches release puts extreme wear on the brake parts.
