I just finished restoring my 41` "B".It has developed a small leak from the crank on the flywheel side. It never leaked before the restoration, and it only leaks when it is running.
Is there a seal that needs to be replaced, or maybe too much oil in the crankcase? 7 1/2 qts. Does the flywheel have to be all the way against the case?
I have 1/8" end play in crank. Puzzled

An eighth inch of crank end play is too much. Reduce that down to 5 to 10 thousandths of an inch by moving the flywheel closer to the block while blocking the crank towards the left side of the tractor. Tighten the flywheel bolts securely after setting the end play. Try this first. If you still have a leak after the above, then you'll have to remove the flywheel and replace the seal in the slinger. There is a seal inside of the flywheel that needs to be replaced. To do it remove the flywheel then remove the cover on the case. You will find an oil slinger there. The seal is on the inside of the slinger. You can get a new seal from Mel and Donnie at Sharps (www.oldjd4u.com). When you put it back on make sure the flywheel sets back into the notch cut in the slinger and is nice and tight on the crank. You'll see the tab on your flywheel that goes into the slinger when you remove it. My 38 A had it so bad it covered the side of the tractor with oil. It took me about 2 hours to change mine over. I know this is kinda short, hope it helps
