I have a 1948 B John Deere Serial #234273. The owners manual states the first reduction gear cover should be drained and refilled with engine oil, periodically. My tractor does not have the drain and refill plug as pictured in the operator's manual. Any ideas? Thank you.

Just looked at my parts book now....the drain plug was added to the B at serial number 259525.
Yes, they fill up with water/condensation which makes problems. They also added a pipe plug on top of the housing at the same serial number. This plug is used to add some oil back to that housing after you drain it (like your book says). It does not refill through the opening that you use to refill the engine crankcase as the other reply said.
I studied my B serial number 263xxx and I see the first reduction gears are lubricated (only marginally) by oil vapors from the engine crankcase. There is a built in dam inside the first reduction gear housing to divert any extra oil back into the engine crankcase. So if you refill the first reduction gear housing with too much oil the big gear will throw it over that dam where it drains back into the crankcase.

I believe the first reduction gear lubrication method changed on the first numbered series tractors in that a oil seal was added to the clutch end of the crankcase (and the opening between the engine crankcase and first reduction gear housing area was eliminated too) and the gears were then lubricated by gear oil same as used in the transmission.

Not sure at what number the drain plugs were first used but not all tractors covered by the owners manual had all the features listed, it covers too broad a range of numbers to be totally accurate. If you ever remove the cover, though, drill and tap the lowest point for a 1/8 or 1/4 inch pipe plug so you can drain it completely. They tend to trap water in the cover and cause all kinds of grief. Don't worry about refilling, it fills first when you start to pour oil into the filler pipe near the pulley.
