Carb problems!! Help!!

Hello!

I have 41 B - hand start which I'm having a hard time getting to start off the flywheel. I know it's getting fuel into the carb but it's not getting to the plugs. I have noticed prior that it usually pushes a good mist but now it isn't. As I roll it over now, there is no mist coming from the compression releases.

I have checked the points, plugs (Auto 386's), and timing and all check out fine. The carb has been taken apart twice in the last year and thoroughly cleaned both times. Even the injectors had the needle treatment. It just isn't drawing enough fuel into the intake to get to the plugs. If it is pulled, it will start.

Is there a possibility that the float is not letting enough fuel into carb?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tim, make sure the choke plate is closing completly & the little spring loaded trap door in the choke plate (if equipted) is there & closing. I have been told (never verified this myself) that if the choke plate is in upside down hard starting will result? Make sure the throttle shaft bushings are not excessively worn & allowing air to enter there & bypass the fuel nozzel & choke assembly. Make sure the throttle shaft bushings are pressed in even with the inside of the throttle bore (this is important). If all ok with above try opening the idle adjustment screw 1/2 turn more for starting. (doing that on my old work "B" makes it a one turn starter). You might try advancing the mag timing about 3/8" also.

Tim, Im not sure what all you did to the carb, but doubt its a float level problem. Even though you say it was disassembled and cleaned, were the brass drill plugs removed and all the tiny passages drilled out and is the float butterfly working properly etc etc etc which is all hard to diagnose over the net. I assume its a mag being hand cranker, and hard to hand start but runs good and starts easy if pulled, is a sign of a weak magneto, especially the impulse spring and trip mechanism, as its what has to snap over fast to get a good enough spark to start when hand cranking. Then at 250 rpm, the spring wind and trip stops working and its turning and firing at rpm speed. Check the point setting of 0.015 and the condensor and check the mags initial static firing timing and listen how good the spring seems to trip over. I still suspect the mag may have a weak spring and/or the points and condensor. Good luck Ol John T

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the 'mist'
at the petcocks.Usually , you see that just at the verge of flooding. If it starts by pulling,
you've got enough fuel (if it stays running). You
might have a mixture problem or (remotely) a weak
magneto. I'd start by checking the choke baffle
plate to see if it closes. Hope this helps some. poorerbut...
